Welcome to MGMaths
Hi, my name is Mark Grundy and I'm a professional online maths tutor. I provide tailored maths tutoring online for Secondary, GCSE and A Level students, helping you build confidence and skills.

Background
I wasn’t a naturally high-achieving student at school. For years, I did just enough to get by — until I realised I was capable of far more if I was willing to properly engage and challenge myself.
That turning point led me to independently study Mathematics and Physics, eventually earning a First Class degree in Astrophysics. Experiencing that transformation first-hand is what shapes my approach to tutoring today: I understand what it’s like to feel capable but unsure how to unlock your potential.
After discovering a love for teaching, I completed a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics and achieved Qualified Teacher Status. I’ve since taught across state and independent schools in Brighton and London, alongside extensive online tutoring.
Today, I work entirely online through my private practice and an online private school, helping students build confidence, mastery, and genuine understanding in Mathematics.
Teaching Style
Through my time teaching, I’ve learned one thing above all else: don’t overcomplicate things.
Clear, simple explanations are almost always more effective than overly “innovative” techniques. My lessons follow a straightforward structure — I demonstrate first, then we work through problems together, and finally the student works independently once they feel confident. This approach builds understanding steadily and avoids unnecessary confusion.
Equally important is listening carefully. I take time to identify exactly where a student is struggling, explain concepts at the right pace, adapt to individual needs, and ask targeted questions to check understanding. These fundamentals are what separate effective teaching from average teaching, and I continually reflect on and refine my approach.
Honesty is also central to how I work. I will never make a student feel bad, but I will be clear if they are not currently on track for their desired result — and honest about what needs to change. I’m equally transparent with parents about progress and expectations. Tutoring is not a guaranteed route to top grades, but with regular lessons and consistent effort between sessions, students typically improve by one to two grades over a year.
My goal is simple: to provide clear guidance, realistic expectations, and consistent support — so students know exactly where they stand and how to move forward.
